The LeetCode grind is losing its signal. Meta now lets you use AI during live coding rounds. Take-homes are getting dropped. Something fundamental just changed.
If you haven't interviewed in the last 12 months, you're probably preparing for the wrong exam.
The technical interview format that dominated hiring for the last decade — LeetCode-style algorithms, whiteboard problems, weekend take-home projects — is in the middle of a rapid overhaul. Companies have realized that the tools engineers use every day have changed so dramatically that the old tests are measuring the wrong things.
At the same time, the job market is unforgiving: 99,283 tech workers have been laid off so far in 2026, tech unemployment has hit 5.8% — the highest since the dot-com era — and the median time to re-employment has stretched to 4.7 months. If you're entering an interview loop right now, you're competing harder than ever for roles that require a different kind of preparation than what worked two years ago.
Here's what the new interview actually looks like.
What's Dying: The Take-Home Is Losing Signal
Take-home projects have been a staple of engineering hiring for years. A company sends you a weekend project, you return polished code, they evaluate your architecture and style. Clean format, low scheduling overhead, easy to run asynchronously.
That model is collapsing — and fast.
The reason is straightforward: AI coding tools have become too good at solving take-homes. Startups are dropping take-homes because candidates increasingly simply input them into a tool like Claude Code, meaning they offer close to zero signal. When a tool can produce a passing submission in under an hour, the project no longer tells you anything about the candidate. The hiring signal has been laundered out.
The same degradation is hitting automated screening systems. AI-generated code can pass syntax and style checks while revealing nothing about how the engineer actually thinks. Companies that relied on take-homes as a first filter are scrambling to replace them with something that can't be trivially automated away.
This doesn't mean your code doesn't matter. It means the format for evaluating it has to change.
What Replaced It: AI-Assisted Live Coding
Meta made the most visible move. Starting in late 2025 and rolling out broadly across 2026, Meta added an AI-enabled coding round to its standard interview loop — replacing one of the two traditional coding segments at the onsite stage.
The format is unlike anything most engineers have prepared for:

- Multi-file project structure — not disconnected algorithm problems. You receive a real mini-codebase and are asked to extend or debug it across multiple checkpoints.

Meta isn't alone. Google, Rippling, and a growing number of tech companies now allow or actively encourage AI tool usage during technical interviews. The question has shifted from "can you write this function from scratch?" to "can you ship working, production-quality code using the tools you'd actually use on the job?"
The Trap Candidates Keep Falling Into
The most common mistake in AI-assisted rounds is treating the AI as a black box. Paste in the problem, copy out the answer, move on. Interviewers notice — and it tanks your score.
Candidates have received negative feedback for appearing to rely heavily on AI, which impacted the quality of their solution. The AI round isn't testing whether you can delegate to a model. It's testing whether you can orchestrate AI effectively while demonstrating that you understand the code it produces.
The AI assistants in these environments are genuinely useful for generating boilerplate, class templates, file parsing code, and test cases. They're unreliable on subtleties — expect off-by-one errors, incorrect time complexity analysis, and hallucinated library APIs. Interviewers know this. Catching and correcting those errors is part of the evaluation.
The skill being tested is the same one that separates good engineers from great ones on the actual job: the ability to critically evaluate AI output, spot incorrect assumptions, and iterate toward a correct solution without losing track of what the code is supposed to do.
The Other Half Is Getting Harder
While live coding rounds are evolving to allow AI tools, the rest of the interview loop is going in the opposite direction — toward deeper, harder-to-fake human judgment calls.
System design rounds at big tech companies are now more rigorous and domain-specific. If you're applying for a payments infrastructure role, expect a question about exactly that — not a generic "design Twitter" prompt. If you're interviewing for a data platform team, expect a real tradeoff discussion between streaming and batch pipelines, not a whiteboard exercise about hash maps.
The calibration has shifted because interviewers know that generic system design answers can be coached and AI-polished. What they're probing for is depth: the kind of specificity that only comes from having actually dealt with the failure modes of a system in production.
There's also a new counter-check emerging even in coding rounds. Interviewers are trained to dig deeper when a candidate writes unusually clean code quickly — asking follow-up questions like "Why this variable name?" and "What happens if input is null?". The presence of AI in the workflow means interviewers probe harder to verify that genuine understanding is there underneath.
How to Actually Prepare for This
Most engineers preparing today are optimizing for an exam that's already changed. Here's where the effort should go.
Practice AI-Assisted Coding in an Unfamiliar Codebase
The AI-enabled interview format is fundamentally different from writing code from scratch with autocomplete. You need to get comfortable with:
- Reading and navigating unfamiliar multi-file codebases quickly — most candidates spend too long orienting before they start producing anything useful
- Generating code with AI and immediately stress-testing it — can you spot an off-by-one error or a missing null check in what the model produced?
- Narrating your reasoning while you work — interviewers need to follow your thought process, not just the final output
- Catching AI errors before they compound — an error in step 2 of a multi-checkpoint problem cascades through everything that follows
If you've only used Claude Code or Copilot on your own projects, you're missing the hardest part of the test: working in someone else's code under time pressure while maintaining a running commentary.
Build Real Depth in Your System Design Domain
Generic "design a URL shortener" prep won't hold up in 2026. Build genuine knowledge in the domain you're targeting. Read real post-mortems — the Google SRE book, the Netflix Tech Blog, AWS architecture case studies. Understand why specific systems fail in production, not just how they're drawn on a whiteboard.
The pattern that's winning in system design rounds right now: candidates who answer from actual experience. "I dealt with exactly this problem at my last company — here's what we tried, here's why it failed at scale, and here's what we shipped instead." That specificity is impossible to fake and impossible to AI-generate on the spot.
Quantify Your Impact Before You Walk In
Behavioral and experience-based questions are harder to fake with AI, which is exactly why hiring panels are leaning into them more. The differentiator is specificity.
"I improved API performance" won't land. "I reduced P95 latency from 800ms to 120ms by rewriting the query layer, which let the mobile team hit their 200ms SLA for the first time" will.
Before any interview loop, audit your last 18 months for concrete impact: latency numbers, user counts affected, error rate changes, deployment frequency improvements, team-level outcomes. The engineers who nail behavioral rounds in 2026 walk in with 10-15 quantified stories ready to deploy — not improvised on the spot.
This is where your resume work directly carries over. The impact bullets you wrote to get through ATS screening are also the raw material for your interview answers. Engineers who've done the work to quantify and articulate their impact in writing are faster and sharper in the room.
Be Explicit About How You Use AI
In AI-enabled rounds — and in behavioral discussions — don't hide your process. "I used the AI to generate the initial skeleton, then noticed it was doing an O(n²) scan that would blow up at scale, so I replaced it with a hash map lookup" signals both AI fluency and genuine technical judgment. That's the double-tap interviewers are looking for.
This matters for the actual job too. According to Anthropic's 2026 Agentic Coding Trends Report, engineers now use AI in approximately 60% of their work — but only 0–20% of tasks can be fully delegated to AI agents. The rest requires exactly the kind of judgment and oversight that the new interview format is designed to surface.
The Market Reality Behind All This
The urgency here isn't abstract. Tech unemployment at 5.8% — the highest level since 2001 — means interview pools are deep and candidates are well-prepared. Oracle cut 30,000 people in a single layoff. Atlassian, Block, and Dell have each publicly attributed recent workforce reductions to AI-driven efficiency gains. The median re-employment time for a laid-off tech worker has stretched from 3.2 months in 2024 to 4.7 months now.
In that environment, the engineers moving fastest through interview loops share three traits:
- They've done the work to quantify their impact — on paper and in conversation, they know their numbers
- They can demonstrate AI-native working patterns — not just claiming they use Copilot, but showing how they've used AI to solve hard problems faster and more rigorously
- They have a coherent career narrative — a clear, specific answer to "what do you do, and why does your background make you the right person for this specific role?"
These aren't separate things. They're all downstream of the same discipline: understanding your own impact well enough to communicate it precisely under pressure.
